Ancient town and early Christian complex in the
bay of Sepen by Omišalj
In the bay of Sepen by Omišalj, in the I. century
A.D., a new roman town Fulfinum was built for
the needs of the veterans of the Flavian emperors.
Municipium Flavium Fulfinum was built according
to the usual town-planning scheme: on a flat area
with rectangular communication lines. The navigable
bay made possible the construction of a protected
harbour, while the fertile soil rich in water
sources was a base for the development of the
town. The town had all the facilities needed for
life in the antiquity: a forum with the Capitol
and the basilica, port facilities with the commercial
quarter, thermae, suburban communication lines
with cemeteries and the water supply system. With
the fall of the antique civilisation, Fulfinum
was probably one of its first victims; envisaged
as a town of high civil accomplishments, open
and fragile, it was sensitive to the turmoils
of life in the late antiquity and therefore it
fell together with the civilisation that had created
it. Nevertheless, the disappearance of this town,
which like humans had its own destiny, left traces
that are reflected in the changes of the spirit
and the form; life continued among its ruins.
In the suburbs of this antique town, an early
Christian complex (Mirine) was built in the V.
century, which is connected to the Benedictine
monastery of St. Nicholas.

The fact that there is a cave in the vincity of
a village Rudine above Slivanjska has been known
for over a hundres year and its entrance used to
be a simple hole in the ground. ever since then
has stirred the imagination of people with its secrets
and the beauty of its calcine ornamentation. According
to a story, smuggler's treasure is hidden in the
cave, and with the first curious visitors there
began a gradual widening of its narrow passages,
so that people could move trought it more freely.
The illumination of the cave by electric light brought
a significant rise of interest for the rich galleries
filled with numeruous stalactites, stalagmites and
calcine pillars. The cave's length (about 110 m),
spaciousness, beauty and interesting sedimented
forms are truly breathtalking. The cave temperature
is between 10 and 13 oC all year round and occasional
leaks and moisture occur only after long periods
of rain. Foot paths are maintaned and safe, enabling
anybody to visit the cave, children and elderly
included. This cave is one more item on the long
list of cultural and natural attractions of the
island Krk. Owning to its northwest position on
the island, it offers the possibility of a visit
and tours to both guests of Krk and the Crikvenica
riviera.

| Dobrinj |

|
Dobrinj was one of the Frankopan castles, and therefore
it had specific appearance; each castle had its
defensive walls, and in Dobrinj this function was
performed by houses, which were built close to one
another. This appearance was largely preserved in
the so called Dolinji Grad (eng. Lower Town), i.e.
in the older part of Dobrinj
The church of St. Stephen, which was mentioned as
early as in Dragoslav's Charter, is one of the oldest
religious-cultural monuments of Dobrinjstina. Besides
this church, Dobrinj has another one, which is devoted
to the Holy Trinity, but since it holds the sculpture
of St. Anthony of Padova, the locals also call it
crikva svetoga Antona (eng. the church of St. Anthony).
This church holds an interesting altar painting
illustrating hell, purgatory and heaven. During
the last few years the church was turned into an
exhibition gallery hall, especially during the summer
months.
In the past, Dobrinj used to have many churches,
among them the church of St. Ambrose, which most
probably stood between the church-gallery and today's
vicarage. Near the church there was also a cemetery,
which was actually located on the place of the present-day
park, or, as natives call it, the jardin.
